Have you tried yin yoga? It’s such a wonderful practice. Do you feel like much of your life is ‘yang’? Always doing, striving, lots of noise, interacting with people and generally always on the move? Yin yoga is the perfect antidote to modern living. The focus is on turning inward, remaining still, surrendering and silence.
In a similar vein, if most of your movement and exercise is all about the muscles, then yin yoga will give you a different experience because its focus is on the connective tissues and joints rather than just the muscles. Remember last week we considered moving the WHOLE body in small, slow, accumulating ways? Yin yoga is a one way we can do this. We put the body in a position, support it with props then completely let go of the muscles, so the joints and connective tissues are gently ‘stressed’ which makes them stronger and more adaptable.
It’s a very regenerative and restorative practice and ideal to take if you feel tired, are recovering from being unwell or feel overwhelmed mentally or emotionally.
