‘Active sitting’ and moving the whole body
Many of us know how that too much sitting can be detrimental to our health. Perhaps you’ve heard the expression ‘sitting is the new smoking’.
Before you now tell yourself you’re doomed due to your sedentary desk job! please do take the approach to ‘soften the edges’ with this. There are many ways to move more when you are aware of it.
I’ve included a very short video above to encourage you to sit on the floor a little more this week. When we sit on the floor we use more of our bodies to hold ourselves up, rather than relying on furniture. Also, you are more likely to change positions when you sit on the floor. You may start cross legged, then move to to kneeling, extend one leg and so on. These small accumulative movements are so good for us and we can incorporate them into our work, chores and leisure time.
Perhaps if you have children this might be easier, as there are more opportunities for floor sitting as you spend time with them. If you find it hard to sit on the floor, keep it short - it’s a practice! Also, when you do sit on a chair you can shuffle forward to the front of the chair instead of slumping to the back. You’ll be using more of your body this way.
While most of us understand the idea of more movement in the sense of exercise or moving the whole body from one place to another, the idea of moving more of the body in different ways might not be how you think of movement. ‘Active sitting’ is one way and I will share more over the next few weeks.

Flow State. Music to get you in the flow.
Here’s another subtsack I’ve signed up to. It’s called Flow State and they share two hours of music each work day that helps you get into the flow of your work. With distractions coming from every direction this is very welcome!
As I write this I am listening to their most recent recommendation; Minoru Muraoka, a Japanese shakuhachi jazz player. It’s lovely.
Many of the playlists they share are also perfect for practicing yoga to.
How to be a good enough human
And another substack! This one is written by psychotherapist Whitney Goodman. Instead of striving for perfection, she writes about being a ‘good enough’ human.
A book on my wish list
How to keep house while drowning. I haven’t read this but sounds like it has been written just for me at the moment! Perhaps you feel the same!
Have a great week of moving, breathing and resting.
As always, I’d be so grateful if you sent this email on to someone who may enjoy it.
Love Sarah
