When the world feels heavy, savasana can help.
Â
Hello my friends,
I hope you are well, and for those in flood affected areas who have suffered loss I hope you are feeling the support around you and taking the time to feel whatever you are feeling.
It has been quite a week here in the Northern rivers. I’m sure you’ll agree the world feels quite uncertain on both a global scale with the heartbreaking news coming from the Ukraine as well as the loss and mayhem in our neighbouring towns due to floods.Â
What are we to do when we feel helpless, or as one friend described feeling ‘survivors guilt’? Of course we do what we can to donate money/time/food/support but still feel like things aren’t quite right? I’m definitely not coming from a place of expertise in this, however I do know that for me, practising yoga and meditation can help me respond to others with more empathy and compassion. As yoga teacher Lizzie Lasater described in a recent online class, that us humans aren’t ‘single instruments’ but are part of an ‘orchestra’. We are social creatures and respond to the energy of those around us. The state of our nervous system can be felt by others. So when we take the time to ‘tune’ our nervous systems to a parasympathetic state we can effect those around us for the better. If we’re in a state of fight or flight, we are on alert and ready for confrontation because we feel we are being attacked. We all know the vibe we pick up from someone in this state. So by taking the time for yoga, breathwork or meditation doesn’t have to be self indulgent like many of us have learnt to see it as.Â
On a lighter note, I’m taking bookings for my July winter yoga weekend. You can find out more here and book your spot if you’d like to join. There are twelve places available and I have about four still left at this stage.Â
Take care,
Love Sarah
